Last weekend, on the day of the big snowstorm, this cat let himself into an apartment building in Roslindale.
  • 06
One of the building residents happened to be a staff member here, and they brought him in to the shelter to stay warm, ride out the storm, and to give him a chance to reunite with his family.

As we do with every animal who comes through our doors, we scanned him for a microchip. He had one, and it was registered!

When we called the number on the chip, the woman on the other end was stunned. Her cat, Tiger, had been missing for FOUR YEARS. She truly thought it had to be a mistake. But it wasn't a mistake, it was him! After all that time, he'd been lost surprisingly close to home.
  • 09
She originally brought Tiger home 16 years ago as a family pet for her kids, and for 12 happy years he was part of their family, until one day he disappeared. They searched everywhere but never found him. You can imagine how shocked she was to hear from us four years later.

When Tiger's family picked him up, he went straight to the vet and then home. He immediately walked over to the food cabinet and pawed at it the way he used to. Then he curled up by the base of the fridge, right where the warm air comes out. Exactly like old times!

Tiger is a little older and a little tattered now, but he's doing well and slowly readjusting to life as a loved house cat after years on the run. The kids came home from college to see their boy again after all these years!

Microchip your cats, y'all, and make sure they are registered/up to date!

Jennifer Gray 3 weeks ago I got the same call from Kitty Angels. My cat had been missing for 10 years. A woman had been feeding outside for a while and had gotten her into her home and eventually contacted Kitty Angels. Scout is back home.

When I opened her carrier she immediately began rubbing all over me and wanted pats. She remembered the spot where she used to eat. It is amazing having her home.

Nicki Dragani Luti This brings tears to my eyes! What an amazing chain of events. I'm so happy for the cat & the family. I wish more people would microchip their pets. I know my 2, who MSPCA alumns are! And, my previous cats were, also.

Delores Barboza Boucher This is why all pet owners should microchip their pets & register them. Make sure you make a change of address in the registry if you move.

Rena Berry If that cat could talk I'm sure he would have a fascinating story to tell.
